Charity holds sale to help refugees

Saint’s Place is holding its biggest fundraiser to help legal refugee families.

It takes about 14 days and over 50 volunteers to open the doors of the Saint’s Place Super Sale at St. Louis Church in Pittsford.

But these volunteers say its all worth it to help legal refugees like Mayada Kasas.

“It’s nice to be here and everyone is welcoming her,” said Kasas. “And everyone was welcoming her with a smile. And she feels much comfortable.”

The proceeds go to helping families to rebuild a life here in our area.

“They never had a real home — we want them to feel welcome,” said volunteer Michelle Quinn. “Sometimes they come in and they are almost in poverty. We want them to come in and get that first jump on life.”

Many of the refugees they serve say with out sales like this their home would not be a home.

“The whole apartment wasn’t so good in the beginning,” said Kasas. “They were so surprised but then the church here… they came and helped her with it. They replaced the bad stuff with better stuff.”

Last year Saint’s Place helped 12,000 refugees and this year due to President Donald Trump’s travel ban, Saint’s Place says they are finding fewer families traveling to the U.S., especially in our area.

“Our biggest challenge this year has been the travel ban,” said Isabell Miller, Executive Director of Saint’s Place. “The number of refugees has dropped, but what we have done is turned our whole mission into helping refugees that are already settled in Rochester. “

From Syria to Rochester, Kasas says as long as her family is safe, they are home.

The ‘Super Sale’ runs until 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night. You can shop Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to noon. The organization will have a “fill a bag deal” on Saturday where you can get as many items that fit in a bag for $8.
