After a tense meeting in Perinton on Wednesday, the Canal Corporation, the group clearing trees along the canal, has changed their plans.
The Canal Corporation has released the following statement regarding their plans:
The Canal Corporation is committed to public safety as well as to community input on its important Embankment Maintenance Program. To ensure the appropriate balance is struck on both of these fronts, the Canal Corporation will pause wide-scale vegetation removal while it works with property owners and community members to address concerns.
The Canal Corporation says the project work will be focused this winter on removing dead trees and underbrush so canal inspectors can better identify any weaknesses or water seepage and maintain the structural integrity of embankments.
They say they will work closely with affected property owners to address future embankment work and will also hire a certified arborist to inform that work.
The Canal Corporation says they will not perform any work before February 7.
