ONTARIO COUNTY, NY (WROC) — A woman from the Bronx is facing charges after the Ontario County Sheriff says she was involved in a local “grandparent scam.”
The scam, deputies said, involved 21-year-old Merlyn Santiago calling an elderly victim in January claiming the victim’s grandson was involved in a crash in Atlanta, Georgia.
Deputies say Santiago told the victim their grandson was being detained and needed $5,000 for bail. The victim, believing this to be real, wired $5,000 to a New York City bank.
But, when the suspect called back to get more money, the victim realized something was up and called 911.
Santiago was arrested with help from New York City Police and is now charged with grand larceny. She is being held in Ontario County Jail on $2,500 bail.
In a release, Sheriff Henderson warns residents to be wary of anyone seeking cash over the phone or internet. If you receive a suspicious phone call, don’t hesitate to call 911 to report it.
