The Brockport Police Department is warning the community about phone scams.

Officers say they’ve responded to several reports of scammers posing as debt collectors.

In one case, the victim gave a supposed IRS collector a large amount of money via Google Play gift cards.

Officers warn that legitimate debt collectors will never require payment by gift cards or money orders. They add that scammers will often tell you that if the debt is not paid, a warrant will be issued for your arrest.

If you believe you were targeted by a phone scam, call the Brockport Police Department at 585-637-1020.
