The Boys & Girls Club of Rochester will host its annual Gala with a ‘farm chic’ theme on Friday, May 4 at the Floreano Riverside Convention Center in Rochester.
Executive Director Dwayne Mahoney discussed the evening and its special honorees Friday during News 8 at Sunrise.
“We honor somebody each year that we think makes a significant contribution to the community, not just from a business side, but just from their own – kind of a personal perspective about Rochester,” Mahoney said. “This year we’re honoring Nelson Leenhouts, and we also have a tribute to his brother Norman.”
The twin brothers founded Home Leasing in 1968, and together built it into a successful real estate company. Mahoney said Nelson Leenhouts will be honored with the Boys & Girls Club Lifetime Achievement Award. “For those who’ve never gotten the chance to meet Mr. Leenhouts, his perspective on how everyone should have affordable housing, just to the many things that he does in the community pretty quietly, his interest in poverty and eradicating poverty, and the people who he associates himself with, and particularly because he doesn’t necessarily have to do that. I think it’s interesting for me just to find people like him that make that a priority for themselves.”
Guests for the Gala are being asked to skip the black tie and dress ‘farm chic.’ It’s a tribute to the Leenhouts farming roots. “They both grew up on a farm and their roots are what we are trying to bring out as we ask people to dress kind of farm chic,” explained Mahoney. “The decor should be pretty interesting and, you know, that sort of ‘farm chic’ kind of has a lot of different versions to it. We’re trying to make sure that people understand that it should be fun, and we also don’t want people to show in black tie, because for him it’s not that type of an event.”
The Gala begins at 6:30 p.m. and will also feature a performance by the Boys & Girls Club Sweet Dancerz.
