Black bear spotted in Palmyra

PALMYRA, NY (WROC) — Here’s another reminder to take down or move any bird feeders around your home.

A black bear was spotted off of Hydesville Road in Palmyra on Tuesday morning. Photos taken by Dick Leeuwen and sent to News 8 show the bear apparently targeting what looks like a bird house and feeder.

Last month, the DEC urged homeowners to remove or secure easy food sources, like bird feeders and trash cans, that might attract bears as they emerge from their winter dens.

“Due to poor natural food availability last fall, many black bears went into their dens with low-fat reserves and as they begin to emerge from winter dens, have already begun seeking out food sources around homes,” the DEC writes.
