Beloved EstroFest character returns

The ladies of EstroFest will hold a FUN-raiser this Friday and Saturday, April 19 and 20, with performances at 7:00 p.m. each night at Blackfriars Theatre in Rochester.

EstroFest performer Dresden Engle and Blackfriars Theatre Artistic Director Danny Hoskins discussed the upcoming performances Monday during News 8 at Noon.

“We are going to see sketch comedy,” said Engle. “A lot of people are like, what’s sketch? Well, it’s like ‘Saturday Night Live.’ It’s scripted, and it’s funny, and we’re presenting audience faves for the stage. So these are ones that have made the audiences crack up for years, tried and true comedy. A third of our show is video. So what you can’t see on stage, and we invite a lot of our actor friends to be in it, will be in our videos. Danny is also going to join us for some sketches too! And we’re bringing back one of our founders, who hasn’t been with us in a long time, Adele Fico, to resurrect her ‘Grandma Nonna’ character.”

EstroFest has been making audiences laugh for 20 years, going back to the first performance in January of 1999. Hoskins is looking forward to joining the fun. “I’ve been able to perform with them a couple of times, which is hysterical,” he said. “It’s just as fun backstage as it is on stage too, being a part of the team. But it’s going to be real exciting. They’re doing a fundraiser to support our 70th season. So Blackfriars turns 70 years old next year. So EstroFest is giving us kind of a kickoff to our 70th season to celebrate.”

Blackfriars has opened its doors to a variety of community artists. “It’s a lot of collaboration,” said Hoskins. “Blackfriars has been working hard to create a lot of collaborations over the past couple of years. We’ve worked with the Rochester Latino Theatre Company, PUSH Physical Theatre, and a number of new organizations, businesses, restaurants, have come on board over the past couple years. That’s been really, really wonderful. It feels good to have everybody there.”

Now it’s your turn to be there too! Make sure you look for Engle as “Mother Moose” along with her sidekick Gingerbread Man, played by Andrea Holland.
