At least one person is badly injured after a car burst into flames in a parking lot at the Paradise Speedway.
According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, police identified the driver as 69-year old Michael Humphrey from Oswego. Humphrey had completed a practice session on the track with his micro sprint car when all of a sudden the vehicle caught fire.
Witnesses said the car became engulfed in flames while Humphrey was still inside it. Other racers and fans rushed over to the vehicle to help Humphrey get out. As a result of the fire, Police say the man suffered third degree burns covering most of his body.
The man was taken by Mercy-Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital and was rushed into the Intensive Care Unit. Humphrey is listed in guarded condition.
It’s unclear how the fire started. The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the matter.
