Applied Image grows footprint overseas

Local News

Rochester technology company Applied Image is seeing growth thanks to a major uptick in international trade.

Applied Image President Glenn Jackling discussed the growth and the company’s new technology Wednesday during our Greater Rochester Enterprise Why ROC conversation during News 8 at Sunrise.

“This year we’re celebrating our fortieth anniversary,” said Jackling. “The founder of the company, Bruno Glavich, he was also one of the founding members of the Rochester Regional Photonics Cluster. The company is really a precision imaging company, and what we do is we make products that are used for the calibration, alignment and image quality analysis for photonic based systems.”

Applied Image recently announced a new digital pathology imaging application. “The new product that we just recently announced is a color calibration slide,” Jackling explained. “It’s intended to help pathology researchers standardize the color that they have for their digital images.”

Jackling said the company has effectively leveraged Rochester’s assets to strengthen its place in our hub optics, photonics and imaging. “We’ve worked closely with the universities in terms of recruiting. We have had interns that have come from the Optics Program at the University of Rochester as well as the Microelectronics Program at RIT, and the Imaging Science Program at RIT, so we’ve had co-ops and interns from all three of those areas.”

Over the last year, a surge in international trade has bolstered Applied Image’s bottom line. “We’ve actually enjoyed about 32 percent growth internationally this year in 2017, and when I started to look at that I was a little bit surprised,” admitted Jackling. “But we’ve really tried to engage with our customers in a different way. We’ve gotten more business with existing customers as well as developed new relationships through our website and search engine optimization and a better marketing program from that perspective. We have also taken advantage of Empire State Development programs, both in terms of supporting us at an international trade show and I recently went to Israel on a trade mission as part of the Global NY program.”

Jackling and Applied Image will be among the presenters at the upcoming Eyes on International Trade event at Nextcorps in Rochester next Tuesday, April 10. The international trade event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit the Greater Rochester Enterprise website, click here.
