AOL has announced that AOL Instant Messenger will be discontinued on December 15. On that date, AIM products and services will be shut down and will no longer work.
The company says their “focus will always be on providing the kind of innovative experiences consumers want” and that they are excited to focus on building the next generation of iconic brands and products.
People who use @aim.com email addresses will still be able to send and receive email as usual.
Data associated with AIM will be deleted, but users can manually save images and files to their computer before the morning of December 15. Chat histories can also be viewed and saved before December 15.
“We loved working and building the first chat app of its kind since 1997,” the company says.
