The Amerks hosted their fifth annual Donate Life event at the Blue Cross Arena Friday night. During the event, the Amerks partner with the Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network to raise awareness for Organ Donation.
It gives recovery network staff, volunteers, and members of the Amerks Alumni Association the chance to encourage people to enroll in the New York State Donor Life Registry, which can help avoid difficult decisions for family members down the road.
“Often times we have to have difficult conversations in the hospital when a loved one has passed away or is nearly passing away and families have to make decisions about organ donation on behalf of their loved one,” said Nancy Ryan of the Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network. “Not an easy thing to think about.”
Locally, more than 600 patients are currently waiting for a kidney, heart, liver, or pancreas transplant.
