“It’s an exciting time,” said Matt Hurlbutt, Greater Rochester Enterprise’s Interim President and CEO.
GRE and Invest Buffalo Niagara have teamed up in hopes to catch amazon’s attention.
“We think it creates a creative new opportunity that’s a little out of the box for Amazons creation,” he said.
If Western New York is chosen, Amazon’s second headquarters could end up right here in the City of Rochester…well maybe.
“We’ve put together a package of over 8 million square feet of existing and build opportunities for their consideration and Buffalo has as well,” he added.
According to Hurlbutt, 50,000 jobs could be added. Which, he hopes, will encourage current Rochesterians to stay here, but bring in more people.
“Also, it’s not just new jobs, I’m sure they’ll poach talents from other existing companies. They are a force to be reckoned with,” said Bob Duffy, President of the Rochester Chamber of Commerce.
Bob Duffy adds being a smaller city means an easier commute in an up-and-coming downtown area. George Conboy, Chairman of Brighton Securities, agrees this would help our region economically, but there’s always perspective: it could drive up property value.
“On the one hand you say that’s great, my house is worth more. On the other hand, you say gee if I’m looking to buy a house I might have to pay a little bit more,” explained Conboy.
The competition may be fierce; but for now, Western New York has the best shot as anyone. Don’t count us out just yet.
If Western New York is picked, Amazon will choose if the location is in Buffalo or Rochester. That decision will hopefully be made quickly, as Amazon wants to start occupying space in 2018.
