More than 20 Allendale Columbia School kindergartners went shopping Wednesday, but not for themselves.
The students took a field trip to Target to buy gifts for Hillside Family of Agencies’ Special Santa program.
Kindergarten teacher Barb King says this event reinforces lessons the students learn in the classroom.
“We talk about what we need to survive, and what we want,” King says. “We had a great Junior Achievement person talk to them about that. So kids know that today is not about them, it’s about giving to others.”
The students spent the proceeds from a recent bake sale, which was planned, set up, and managed entirely by the students.
The Special Santa program benefits more than 2,300 youth and families served by Hillside Family of Agencies in the Rochester area.
