Portland Police say that on Saturday April 2 at 11:05 at night, a sergeant stopped a 2014 Range Rover after observing the driver fail to stop for a red light. The driver of the vehicle was US soccer star Abby Wambach.
The sergeant contacted Wambach and observed signs that she was under the influence of alcohol.
Police say that a Traffic Division officer responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. Wambach failed field sobriety tests and, based on the test failure and other indicators of impairment, arrested for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII) – Alcohol.
Wambach was handcuffed and transported by police to Central Precinct in Downtown Portland for a breath test, which she failed.
Wambach was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on a charge of DUII. According to jail records, she was released on her own recognizance after processing.
Police say that Wambach was polite and cooperative throughout the investigation.
Wambach sent a message out on Facebook Sunday afternoon saying that she let herseld and others down. “I take full responsibility for my actions. This is all on me. I promise that I will do whatever it takes to ensure that my horrible mistake is never repeated.”
MINI USA, who Wambach was a spokesperson for, released the following statement Sunday night regarding her arrest.
We’re obviously concerned about the alleged DUI attributed to Abby Wambach. This behavior is against the values we promote as an organization and the safety of everyone on the road is a priority here at MINI. Because of this, we are re-evaluating her association with the brand and are pulling content that individually features Abby from our marketing. We will continue to assess the situation and weigh our options.
