AARP helping people protect identity with shredding services

Local News

It’s Spring Cleaning season, and people are being urged to also clean out any tax and financial records they have. AARP New York is helping, in an effort to prevent identity theft.

They hosted a free fraud prevention shredding event on Tuesday as part of “Operation: Stop Scams.”

It’s part of a statewide series of events, providing free and secure destruction of personal financial records and other sensitive documents to protect New Yorkers.

“If you have the opportunity to purchase a shredder or to go to another event in the community to have those documents shredded, I encourage to have those documents shredded and destroyed so they don’t fall into the wrong hands,” said Randy Hoak, Associate Director for AARP.

To avoid having your information compromised, experts recommend shredding anything containing social security numbers, birth dates, signatures, and account numbers.
