FAIRPORT, NY (WROC) — United States Citizenship and Immigration Services welcomed 51 new citizens on Thursday during a naturalization ceremony in Fairport.

The ceremony was held at Minerva Deland School and included people from 24 different countries. One of these new citizens, Michael Francis, is originally from Canada.

He came to the U.S. because his father was struggling to find work.

“It’s a dream come true, I love this country and I’m just happy to be a part of it now,” he said. “I get to vote and being that I’m from Canada I have now switched myself to being with the Buffalo Sabres.”

During the 2018 fiscal year, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services welcomed more than 750,000 new citizens during naturalization ceremonies.
