10-year-old boy dies after being left home alone in Churchville, neighbors speak out

Local News

Kris Shannon was heart-broken when she learned her 10-year-old neighbor died.

“I’ve never even heard of someone that young having this happen. Just a big shock,” said Shannon.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, J’Vieon Grayson-Sutton was found unresponsive Monday night by his 6-year-old brother. No one else was home, so the 6-year-old ran next door for help. The neighbor performed CPR and called 911.

Investigators say the the two boys were left home alone around 8:30 Monday. Their mother went to work and her boyfriend, the 6-year-old’s father left to run errands. Deputies arrived on scene one hour later.

“He was a good kid,” said Emily Harris.

14-year-old Emily Harris lives across the street. She and J’Vieon used to ride the school bus every morning to Churchville-Chili Middle School.

“He was very head strong. Loved to do his own thing,” said Harris.

Harris says she felt bad for him because he was sometimes bullied at school.

“In and out of school you can tell it was hard for him. You can tell. I would see him get bullied on the bus, but I never said anything and I should’ve,” said Harris.

Police say white powder was found inside the home, but field tests came back negative for drugs. While they try to determine a cause of death, neighbors here are in mourning.

“I’m just shocked. I’m just shocked,” said Shannon.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is working with Child Protective Services on this case. There’s no word whether there will be any criminal charges. Meantime, the school said it will offer counseling for students and staff, in the wake of his death.
