Fredrick Johnson was to the point when he filled out his form nominating Lauren Szklany for a Golden Apple Award.
“She’s the best teacher I’ve had and helps me be the best student I can be,” he wrote.
Because Fedrick is only in 3rd grade, he hasn’t had many teachers, but, still, that’s a great compliment.
His classmates also find Szklany to be one of the best teachers in Williamson Elementary.
“She just plans all these cool things and gives us cool work,” said Brett Byron.
“Mrs. Szklany is probably one of the best 3rd grade teachers of any of the teachers I’ve come across, she’s really nice and I love that she gives us work that’s challenging if we think is too easy or anything like that,” said Natalie Schmeelk.
Szklany’s principal Ellen Saxby also finds her to be exceptional.
“She’s passionate,” Saxby said. “You can tell every day, she’s so enthusiastic, loves what she does and so happy to be here we’re do lucky to have her here.”
Szklany did not see the surprise coming Tuesday.
“I’m shaking a little bit, my heart is beating really fast,” she said.
It was after spending 9 years teaching in Lyons, Szklany moved over to another small Wayne County school district, Williamson.
“The students inspire me every day, and my coworkers, and we work hard together and we share our resources and we’re doing a lot of fun things in our classroom and that’s not just thanks to me, but also to the other students in 3rd grade,” she said.
