Rochester has been cheering Brian Gionta goals for Gionta’s entire career.
For the first time tomorrow night, Gionta will be cheering Rochester goals.
Gionta will play for the Amerks Friday, in a one game only event, as he gets ready to captain Team USA in the Olympics next week.
When he started training with the Amerks back in the fall, Gionta says the original plan was to stay in shape for the Olympics and to not play in any Amerks games.
That all changed over the last month.
“It’ll just be a fun night,” said Gionta. “It’s been a team that you have grown up watching all your life and I wore the jersey when I was in minor hockey as a kid with the Amerks, so it’ll be fun to kind of come full circle. The organization has been great from day 1, the guys have been great, so it’s been a great year, and this is just one more step.”
“It’s special, and I’m happy for him,” said Amerks Head Coach Chris Taylor. “I’m happy for our hockey team, I’m happy for our whole organization, I’m happy for the city and I think it’s just going to be a special night.”
