Former Monroe County Sheriff Andy Meloni laid to rest today

Rochester, NY (WROC)-  Former Monroe County Sheriff Andy Meloni was remembered today.  Meloni served as sheriff for 21 years before retiring in 2001.

Dozens of law enforcement officers lined into the building ready to pay their last respects to Meloni.  Meloni’s son was the first speaker.  He recalled his father’s sense of humor that he passed on to his children.  Andrew Meloni told one story where he was riding with his father in a sheriff’s car.

“This individual goes by us at about 120 miles per hour.  My father said, we’re going to get this guy.  I said ok.  He pulls out into the left lane.  He’s in pursuit.  He backs off the pursuit.  I go, dad what’s up? Not safe?  Conditions not safe?  He goes, no I don’t know where the switch are for the sirens and lights.”

Meloni died Friday at the age of 84.
