Challenger Baseball World Series takes over Frontier Field

News
Rochester, NY (WROC) – More than 300 kids from all over the area took over Frontier Field, for the “Challenger Baseball World Series.”

The game brings children who are physically or mentally challenged together. All the players are between four and eighteen years old, and both girls and boys are allowed to play.

“I like baseball because I like to run a lot and catch but I don’t want to throw a ball too quick because not everybody can catch the ball,” explains pitcher, Ariel Ortiz. “I don’t want to hit anybody. I do a gentle toss so they can catch it.”

Players are paired up with a “buddy” who helps them hit the ball, run the bases, and play in the field.

“We like playing outside. It’s fun. We really get active a lot,” says participant, Katie Schoensoleer.

The Challenger Baseball Program was started in Fairport, in the early 90s.
