Brockport football soars into Sweet Sixteen

Local Sports

For the second straight season, the Brockport football team is 11-0 and heading into the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.

Last year was a surprise.

This year… it was expected.

“Doing this back to back is not easy.” said senior Jake O’Connell. “It’s not easy in the pros. It’s not easy at the college level or the high school level. We haven’t taken anything for granted and we’ve really just been taking it one day at a time.”

The Golden Eagles have been ranked in the Top 5 all season long and enter Saturday at number three.

They have the number one ranked defense in the country that has allowed an average of negative two rushing yards per game.

That crazy video game statistic is thanks in large part to nine returning starters on defense, four of which are seniors.

“It’s huge because they’ve been through every situation you can imagine, whether it be a game or practice,” smiled head coach Jason Mangone. “Their expectation is to go in and shut the other team down.”

The green and gold will lean on their playoff experience when they host RPI Saturday at noon.

“Every game is a must win so we don’t feel extra pressure where it’s like, ‘Oh my God, this is it. If we don’t score this drive the season is over,”‘ laughed quarterback Joe Germinerio. “Guys are going to play how we’ve played all year and we’re just going to execute our stuff.”
