GREECE, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - Millions of Americans know Donna Lynne Champlin as Paula, the loveable character on the hit TV show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
Champlin could not be a better fit for the show that regularly drops in comedy-laced musical numbers.
Since her days at Greece Athena and Hochstein School of Music and Dance, Champlin has focused on music and theater, eventually making her way into Broadway productions like Billy Elliot the Musical and Sweeney Todd.
Her ride on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has been filled with “nevers”: she never thought she’d get picked, she never thought it would draw close to a million viewers per episode and she never thought it would keep her husband and their 6-year-old son to L.A. for has long as it has.
“The joke is with our apartment in L.A. because we only thought we were going to be there for 5 months, we have paper blinds and I was like, ‘Baby, do you think maybe we should invest in plastic blinds?’” Champlin said.
Her TV work opened the door to film work.
If you’ve seen the movie Downsizing, you’ve seen Champlin in one scene acting opposite Matt Damon and Kristin Wiig, a fellow Rochesterian.
“We spent the whole time chatting about the House of Guitars and garbage plates and stuff and that was fun,” she said.
Despite her success out west, she says she hasn’t forgotten her theatrical roots back east.
“That part of my life is very much alive, I miss it very much and certainly if something came along, I would absolutely do it,” she said.
She also hasn’t forgotten her hometown, always finding time to visit her family.
“It was amazing, the artistic support in Rochester was vital to who I am today, bar none,” she said.
