Area College Student Looks To Continue His Dream On The Ice

Mike Iulianello is a senior at St. Bonaventure University studying marketing and sports management but his heart belongs on the ice.

He is the captain of the men's hockey team and fell in love with the game at a young age as part of Webster's youth hockey program at the Webster Ice Arena.

"When the rink opened in 1999 I signed up for summer camp with Jim Armstrong," Iulianello said. "I was scared at first and cried a little bit my first session, but right away I loved it. They took me on and from there I just fell in love with the game."

Mike became familiar with the Red Bull Crashed Ice Challenge last year. His coach at Bonaventure saw a flier and told him it would be a perfect way to continue his passion for skating. The challenge is a four-event circuit that goes around the globe.

"They call it a down hill skating competition," Iulianello said. "It's a combination of hockey, skating, downhill snowboarding and skiing. It's an intense event, the adrenaline is flowing when you do it. I want to do something else besides hockey because I know that is ending for me next month and my career will be over. I figured this is a neat opportunity and I would go for it and see what happens."

Mike is a self-proclaimed adrenaline junkie. This event combines his love of a rush with his skating skills. The rules are simple, first one to the bottom wins.

"If something gets my adrenaline going I usually like to go for it," Iulianello said. "It doesn't matter if it's making videos and putting them on YouTube or skating or pond hockey, I'm an outdoors kid. I like to do all that stuff on the water and ice, anything to get m adrenaline flowing."

The U.S. event is being held February 20th-22nd in St. Paul, Minnesota. Mike hopes to be there. He has submitted his video through the challenge contest's website and is using social media to get votes. He has his eye on the prize.

"One of my uncles told me that there is always that person that gets selected no matter what you do, whether it's  applying for the big college, the Ivy League school, going for that top hockey program or doing whatever it is you want to do in life," Iulianello said. "There is always that person who gets selected and if you don't try then you are never going to be that person."

An attitude like that is tough to beat.
