Victor Golfer Preparing for 101 Holes in One Day

At Victor Hills Golf Club on June 20th, just over two weeks from today, Mark Somers of Victor will attempt the Hundred Hole Hike: 100 holes in one day.

"The goal is to play 101 and get over 100. My plan is to start early in the morning, probably 5:30, and finish by 9:30 at night."

Somers is a lawyer by trade and a longtime golfer. He's taking on this marathon day at the links in order to raise money for House of John in Clifton Springs, a home that specializes in hospice care. Mark's father-in-law, Gene, spent his final days there before passing last November.

"I figured it'd be a great way to raise money for the House of John but bring awareness to hospice care. They are very caring and loving. They explain to the family the process of dying. They kept Gene comfortable, they gave him dignity," says Somers.

100 holes in one day is no small feat. Mark says the key is to not waste time in between shots. Just grip it and rip it.

"Right now, if I play 18, I can play in 2 and a half hours, 2:20," he says. "No practice swings. I don't take a lot of time to aim the putt. I just try to play quickly."

Mark says that fundraising through his website is going well and he can't wait to spend a day on the course remembering his father-in-law and raising money for a good cause..

"End stage of life is obviously a hard thing to go through for families and these homes are out there for people to take advantage of and they're very helpful."
