Case was led by Tim Chung who had 21 points and seven rebounds. The Spartans (12-12, 5-8 UAA) only played six players due to two starters being suspended. Case's David Thompson poured in 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Rochester was led by sophomore Tyler Sankes (McQuaid) who had a double-double off the bench with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Nate Vernon had 11 points and senior John DiBartolomeo was held in check all day by freshman Spencer Boyd and ended with 10 points. The Yellowjackets drop to 21-3 overall, 10-3 in the UAA.
DiBartolomeo did move into 3rd place on the Rochester all-time scoring list and 2nd in school history in assists. He now has 1,1719 career points and 521 career assists for the Yellowjackets.
Trailing by six early in the second half, Case ran off an 11-2 run over a five minute span to grab a 37-34 lead. Rochester would tie the game back up at 40 with 8:29 remaining, but two Chung 3-pointers gave Case an eight point lead with 6:18 left. The Yellowjackets would battle back to within one after a Kevin Sheehy 3-pointer, but Case made a layup and three free-throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Early in the game, Rochester used a 9-0 run to quickly grab a six point lead at 13-7. The Spartans would hang tough with the sixth ranked Yellowjackets and would tie the game at 17 with 5:59 left in the half behind a Chung 3-pointer.
At the break, UR held a three point edge, 26-23. Case seemed to be the one's allowing UR back in the game at that point, committing 15 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. But the home 'Jackets couldn't capitalize and shot just 10-33 from the floor (2-13 3-pointers) in the half.
Vernon hit two jumpers out of the break to give UR its biggest lead of seven a minute into the second half. Case would then go on the 11-2 run that gave them a three point edge with just over 12 to play.
UR shot a combined 3-25 (12%) from behind the arc and 22-65 (33.8%) from the floor. Case made seven three's and outrebounded the Yellowjackets 39-32. The game featured six ties and five lead changes.
UR honored its seniors, DiBartolomeo, Rob Reid and Dan Shapiro before the game as a part of senior day on the Rochester campus.
