U of R Wins 5th Straight Title
Kate Agan recorded a double-double and three other Yellowjackets scored in double figures as the University of Rochester defeated Roberts Wesleyan 68-51 to win their fifth straight Wendy's Classic title. Agan scored 12 points and pulled down a game-high ten rebounds. Rochester has won 15 straight games in the Wendy's Classic. Jessica Mastronardi also scored 12 points behind four of five shooting from behind the arc. The senior guard was selected first team All-Classic. Jodie Luther and Caroline Bernal-Silva tallied 11 points each while Melissa Alwardt, the tournament MVP, scored all eight of her points in the second half. The junior also grabbed seven rebounds. The Yellowjackets opened an early 6-0 lead behind four points from Luther. Roberts Wesleyan's Lindsay Beckwith made a layup at 12:58 gave the Raiders their only lead of the game (7-6). Madeline Korber responded moments later with two of her seven points to give Rochester the lead for good. A 14-4 Yellowjacket run opened up an 11 point lead midway through the first stanza. Rochester led at the half 27-17. Rochester's largest lead of the game came with just over eight minutes to play in the second half. A Melissa Alwardt three pointer from the left side put the Yellowjackets on top 50-31. Roberts Wesleyan's Brittany McMillon led all scorers with 20 points. The junior forward also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Marissa Bunce scored thirteen points for the Raiders on three of eight shooting from three point range. The Yellowjackets return to UAA competition next weekend when they travel to Brandeis on January 22 and NYU on January 24.
