Tournament MVP Milan Moncrief scored 18 points, including 14 in the second half, to lift the University of Rochester 60-54 over St. John Fisher in the championship game of the Wendy's Classic. It was a record 10th title for the Yellowjackets. Fellow newcomer John DiBartolomeo, fresh off a 30 point explosion in the semifinal against Roberts Wesleyan, scored four points and dished out four assists in 17 minutes of action. DiBartolomeo earned First Team All-Classic accolades. The Yellowjackets improve to 12-2 on the season while the Cardinals fall to 12-3. The loss snaps a nine game winning streak for Fisher, dating back to December 12. Rochester led wire-to-wire in the tournament finale, never trailing the Cardinals in a game that featured a series of runs by both sides. The Yellowjackets got off to a quick start and led 12-3 with 15 minutes to play in the first half. The cross town rivals continued to battle back and forth throughout the first stanza. Fisher trimmed the lead to just four points when senior guard Matt Newman made consecutive layups in the final minute. At the half Rochester led 25-21. A Newman three pointer pulled the Cardinals within one with 14 minutes remaining in the game. Rochester responded with a Nate Novosel layup and a Moncrief three pointer to push the lead to six. Colin Cubit's only points of the game gave the ‘Jackets an eight point lead with just five minutes remaining. The Cardinals would threaten, narrowing the gap to just four points with three minutes to play. Moncrief, though, iced the game with a pair of free throws with thirty seconds left. Rochester's bench outscored Fisher's 27-6, including 19-4 in the second half. Nate Novosel scored 10 points while Marcus Roberson grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Fisher was paced by Matt Newman, whose double-double (19 points, 10 rebounds) helped him earn First Team All-Classic honors. Jordan Gettings added 14 points for the Cardinals.
