Kids and Pros founder Buddy Curry has been running football camps for 13 years in the south. He's bringing his camp north for the first time with this summer's session at ER.
The three-day camp is for kids age 7-13 and completely free. Curry says he hopes to have 200 campers.
Curry is a former NFL linebacker and he'll be bringing other ex-pros to teach at the camp with him, hence its name. The coaches will include former Buffalo Bills Ruben Brown and Joe Bock, who also attended East Rochester.
"We get NFL players to come out in their communities and give back to their community," Curry said. "They're teaching kids the proper way to tackle. The proper fundamentals of the positions and also, they're sharing their life story that inspires kids."
Brown's foundation raises money so kids can pursue activities like the Kids and Pros camp. "It's a perfect fit," Brown said. "He's a former player. I'm a former player. We team up to give the community and the kids the type of resources that will empower them, educate them and inspire them."
Like any other camp these days, concussion awareness and safety are a priority for Curry. "The actual fundamentals are what we need to instill in these kids so they learn the safe way and the fun way to play," he said. "It makes for safer play, but also better play. At the end of the day, it's fun."
"This is what we need," Brown says emphatically. "This is the step we need to take to let the public know that football is a safe sport. It can be safer. There's proper ways and techniques to ensure you get the best outcome. These techniques will not only make you safer, but it will actually improve your ability to play the game."
The East Rochester camp is July 28th-30th. Information can be found at http://kidsandpros.com
