By PRESCOTT ROSSI | email@example.com
The Rochester Lancers (5-12) lost a heartbreaker on Saturday when the Syracuse Silver Knights (10-7) defeated them by a score of 17-10 in front of 8524 fans. The match was a penalty filled affair with six blue cards, two yellow cards, and a red card. The Lancers were led offensively by Gary Boughton who had a four point night with a goal and a pair of assists. Gavin McInerney made 10 saves in the loss. The Lancers travel to face the Pennsylvania Roar on Thursday evening to make up the previously postponed match from earlier in the month.
The Lancers would get on the board first when Boughton set up Mauricio Salles for the goal a little over five minutes in. Less than two minutes later, the Lancers doubled their lead when Sean Summerville scored his second of the season and Boughton picked up his second assist of the night. The Silver Knights cut the lead in half when Nelson Santana scored off a Slavisa Ubiparapovic assist to make it 4-2 Lancers after fifteen minutes of play.
Syracuse drew even less than three minutes into the second quarter when Neto set up Machel Millwood for the back post tap in powerplay goal. The Lancers regained the lead almost seven minutes into the quarter when Boughton streaked down the left side of the field on a one man counterattack and scored. With under four minutes left in the half, Ubiparapovic netted the equalizer from a pass from Kenardo Forbes slotting one just inside the far post to make it 6-6 at the half.
Syracuse opened the second half by taking their first lead of the night early in the second half when Nate Bourdeau took a Lancers who scored with the outside of his right foot. After a skirmish that saw Lancers leading scorer Salles draw a red card, Doug Miller finished off an Edgar Bartolomeu assist to cut the Syracuse lead in half and make it 10-8 Silver Knights after three quarters of play.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Joey Tavernese would post up and then lay it off to Elliot Fauske who would score to tie the game at 10. Syracuse retook the lead less than a minute later as Antonio Manfrut would play a long ball that Millwood would beat McInerney to and score a 3-point goal, giving the Knights a lead they would not relinquish. With under three minutes left, Forbes would convert a penalty shootout attempt to extend the Syracuse lead to five points. The Knights would close the game out with a powerplay goal past Edgar who was on as the sixth attacker when Bo Jelovac set up Neto to give the visitors a 17-10 win.
The Lancers will return to MISL action Thursday, February 20th when they travel to Reading, PA to take on the Pennsylvania Roar at 7:05pm. The Lancers will close out their home schedule for the 2013-14 season on Sunday, February 23rd at 3pm when they host the Baltimore Blast at Blue Cross Arena.
