Knightshawks Raise Banner Then Beat Swarm
Joel McCready scored two fourth-quarter goals in 38 seconds to propel the Rochester Knighthawks to an 8-6 opening-night victory. The back-to-back National Lacrosse League champions opened the 2014 season by raising their 2013 championship banner.
McCready finished with a career high with two goals, three assists and five points. Dan Dawson also had a big night, scoring two goals and adding four assists. In goal, Matt Vinc turned aside 45 shots.
Minnesota lost on opening night for the fifth straight season. The Swarm led 5-4 after three quarters, but could not put away the Knighthawks. Minnesota outscored Rochester 3-0 with Tyler Haas scoring the fifth goal. He finished the contest with two goals as he staked the Swarm to a 6-5 lead at 5:10 of the fourth.
Just over two minutes later, McCready found the net twice to give Rochester a 7-6 lead. Johnny Powless (two goals) added an insurance goal off a feed from Joe Walters (1+1) with 2:31 to play. Swarm goalie Tyler Carlson finished the game with 26 saves.
On January 11th, the Knighthawks will host the Philadelphia Wings at 7:30 p.m. at The Blue Cross Arena. That night, Rochester will induct the newest member into the team’s Hall of Fame.
