Rhinos Get First Home Win
The Rochester Rhinos defeated 5th place VSI Tampa Bay 3:0 in Sahlen's Stadium on Friday, June 14th, 2013.
Rhinos strikers Thomas Kelly McManus and Blake Brettschneider both tallied a goal and an assist, while 2011 Rhinos MVP Tyler Rosenlund scored a goal and 2012 Rhinos MVP JC Banks added an assist.
The Rochester Rhinos opened the scoring in the 4th minute. Rhinos right winger JC Banks served a long ball into the VSI penalty box from the midfield stripe. Rhinos striker Blake Brettschneider battled for the ball in the box with VSI center back Kyle Hoffer, and he took the ball to the endline. Brettschneider laid the ball back to Tyler Rosenlund at the top of the six yard box, and Rosenlund finished to give the Rhinos a 1:0 lead.
Rochester doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute. Banks won a 50/50 ball 40 yards out from VSI's goal, and he picked out McManus running into the VSI penalty area with a one touch pass. McManus was in on goal and calmly finished over VSI's goalkeeper Dave Martin. It was McManus' third consecutive match in Sahlen's Stadium with a goal.
Banks' assist moved him into sole possession of eighth place on the Rochester Rhinos all-time assist list with 14 in only his 39th career start.
Brettschneider scored the final goal of the match in the 66th minute. He started the scoring sequence by winning the battle for a 50/50 ball on the ground. The ball popped loose to Rhinos center midfielder Lance Rozeboom, and Rozeboom was able to take a touch before playing a through ball to McManus down the right flank. McManus patiently took the ball to the endline before he found Brettschneider making a run at the the top of VSI's six yard box. Brettschneider finished past a diving Martin to complete the scoring in the match.
Rochester Rhinos goalkeeper Kristian Nicht made five saves to keep his fourth clean sheet of the season.
The victory moved Rochester into a tie for tenth place with the Wilmington Hammerheads. The Rhinos are now five points behind the eighth place Dayton Dutch Lions for the final spot in the 2013 USL PRO playoffs.
The Rochester Rhinos will host the defending USL PRO Charleston Battery in their next home match on Sunday, June 16th at 4PM in Sahlen's Stadium.
