The Roberts Wesleyan Women's Basketball team earned their first Wendy's College Classic title since the 2001-02 season by defeating SUNY Geneseo 44-41 this evening.
The title is the first for head coach Bob Segave after having reached the championship game four times in the last five years. For the program, this season's title marks the third time the team has won the tournament.
Interestingly, in the 2001-02 victory, Roberts Wesleyan defeated Geneseo by a score of 71-61.
In a game that saw both teams shoot poorly from the field, senior forward Chelsea Sanders earned the double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Wendy's College Classis MVP finished the three-game tournament with 50 points, averaging 16.6 points per game while picking up a double-doubles in the semifinal and final.
Junior forward Marissa Sell was honored by being named to the All-Classic Team after finishing the game with an astounding 18 rebounds. Sell also scored eight points in the winning effort.
The 18 rebounds by Sell is just four shy of the Wendy's individual game record of 22 rebounds, set by Roberts Wesleyan's Candy Day in the 1994 tournament.
Both teams shot under 30% as Geneseo had a slight edge with a 28.8% field goal percentage compared to Roberts Wesleyan's 25.8%.
The difference in the game could be the free-throw shooting as the Redhawks went 7 of 12 at the line as the Knights were 3 of 6.
Roberts Wesleyan also scored 16 points off of turnovers compared to Geneseo's seven points.
The win improves Roberts Wesleyan's overall record to 5-1 as they resume East Coast Conference action. The team visits New York Institute of Technology on Saturday, Dec. 14 for a 1pm game before traveling to LIU Post the following day at 1:30pm.
