Wings Slam Tides

Doug Bernier's fifth inning grand slam broke open a 1-1 game, and Deibinson Romero added a homer as the Red Wings defeated the Norfolk Tides 8-1 Monday evening at Frontier Field. The teams wrap up the four-game series Tuesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The finale features the Fan 4-Pack as well as a Knot Hole Kids' Club Game. In another lefty match up, Scott Diamond started on the hill for the Wings. While Diamond has struggled throughout the season, owning a 3-7 record with a 7.03 ERA, the southpaw has proven success against Norfolk. Diamond is 3-1 with a 1.41 ERA in four career starts against the Tides, including two, nine-inning, complete-game shutouts - his last came in 2013 with the Wings. Tides' starter Nick Additon enters the game with a 3-3 record and 4.21 ERA in his first career appearance against Rochester.

Diamond brought his A-game from the get-go, catching Tides leadoff Julio Borbon looking at the third strike. A flyout and a groundout led to a 1-2-3 top of the first.

The Wings started their offense in the first, as well. Romero recorded the Wings' first hit of the game with a line-drive double past a diving Quintin Berry in left field. Diamond kept the Tides hitless until third-inning leadoff Xavier Paul singled to right field. The Wings' solid defense, however, ended that threat. Eric Farris made a diving catch, while Diamond, Chris Colabello and Bernier worked together to catch Cord Phelps stealing second.

It were the Tides who got on the scoreboard first, though. Brett Wallace doubled to the left field wall, bringing in Berry, making it 1-0 in the fourth inning. The Tides didn't maintain their lead for long, as Colabello hit a solo home run that ended up out of the ballpark and onto Plymouth Avenue, tying the game at one apiece heading into the fifth inning. It was Colabello's fourth homer since returning to Rochester.

The Wings came back in the bottom of the fifth with even more runs. Wilkin Ramirez began the offense with a single up the middle. James Beresford followed up with a walk. Chris Rahl attempted to move over the runners with a sacrifice bunt, but instead, popped up to Additon. Daniel Ortizearned a single as Francisco Peguero dropped the flyball in right field. With bases loaded, Bernier hit a grand slam to the Tides bullpen, giving the Wings a 5-1 lead.

Lester Oliveros replaced Diamond (4-7) on the mound in the top of the seventh. In six innings, Diamond allowed three hits and an earned run with one walk and three strikeouts. Oliveros made a statement with clean-up hitter Wallace, throwing 16 pitches to strike him out, before retiring the other two batters.

The Tides made a pitching change, as well, sending right-hander Tim Alderson to the hill in the bottom of the seventh. Additon (3-4) lasted six innings - his most in a single game this season - and struck out six Wings, another season high. With two outs, Farris started another offensive run for Rochester with a single up the middle. Bernier added a single of his own before Romero cleared the bases, hitting a home run - also onto Plymouth Avenue to give the Wings a comfortable 8-1 lead.

Deolis Guerra worked the ninth inning after Oliveros posted two perfect relief innings, striking out two. Guerra allowed singles to the first two batters he faced, and Wallace pounded a long drive to cenger field. Farris made a long run to the warning track and a leaping catch to rob Wallace of extra bases. Colabello made the final putout at first to seal the win.
