Mud Hens Batter Wings With Longballs

The Toledo Mud Hens used four home runs to top the Red Wings 8-1 Saturday night at Frontier Field. The teams meet again Sunday at 1:05 p.m., with Kyle Gibson on the mound for Rochester.

With scheduled starter Pedro Hernandez scratched due to back soreness, Virgil Vasquez took the mound for the Wings and was greeted rudely - when Toledo's Kevin Russo took Vasquez's second pitch over the wall in left field for an early 1-0 Mud Hens lead. Nick Castellanos added his 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot that put Toledo up 3-0 in their first turn at bat.

The Red Wings couldn't respond in the bottom half of the first, leaving the home team trailing by three after one inning. Vasquez settled down in the top of the second, retiring the Mud Hens in order in the top of the second. Doug Bernier singled in the bottom half of the inning to extend his hitting streak to seven games, but that was all the offense would muster in the second.

Jordan Lennerton cracked a two-run home run in the top of the third inning to push Toledo's lead to 5-0 through three innings.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Mud Hens tacked on another run due to three Red Wings errors in the inning. Argenis Diaz then hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to give the Mud Hens a 7-0 lead after six innings.

Dan Rohlfing led off the seventh inning with a single. With one out, Ray Olmedo earned a walk to give the Red Wings two runners on base with only one out. After forcing Eric Fryer to fly out to left field, Ramon Garcia was relieved by Brayan Villareal with two outs in the inning. Villareal didn't get off to the start he might have hoped for, walking Antoan Richardson to load the bases and then walking pinch hitter Brian Dinkelman to give the Wings their first run of the game. With the bases loaded and Oswaldo Arcia at the plate, the Red Wings would threaten the Mud Hens, but that's all they would do as a ground out ended the rally attempt.

Vasquez allowed five earned runs in four innings. Luis Perdomo pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed two runs (one earned), and Blake Martin made his first Frontier Field appearance with a scoreless inning pitched. Shairon Martis tossed a scoreless eighth inning, and Anthony Slama finished up on the mound for Rochester.
