Meyer Dominates as Wings Top Columbus
By News 8
Deibinson Romero hit a first inning grand slam, and Alex Meyer tossed five hitless innings as the Red Wings hung on to defeat the Columbus Clippers 5-4 Thursday afternoon at Frontier Field. It was the Wings' third straight win, following an eight-game losing streak. The teams play a 7:05 p.m. game Friday night.
Wings starter Meyer got off to a shaky start, walking two batters in the first inning - including lead-off batter Tim Fedroff. Meyer also struck out two, throwing 24 pitches in the top of the first.
Meyer's mound opponent, righty Tyler Cloyd, was the International League Pitcher of the Year in 2012 with Lehigh Valley. Cloyd beat the Wings in Columbus May 5, despite allowing a grand slam home run to James Beresford.
Cloyd also allowed the lead-off batter to reach base Thursday, when Eric Farris dumped a single into right field. The hit extended Farris' hitting streak to eight games. Beresford and Oswaldo Arcia followed with singles, and that set the stage for Romero - who lofted a 1-0 pitch up and over the wall in left field, a grand slam homer that put the Wings ahead 4-0. It was the second home run of the season for Romero.
Cloyd (1-3) was able to settle down after giving up five straight hits in the first, not allowing another run until the fifth. Arcia lined a one-out double into the right field corner for his second hit of the night. Two batters later, Chris Herrmann was able to drop a ball right inside the left field line, driving home Arcia in the process with his third hit of the night, putting the Wings up 5-0.
Meyer's day was done after an impressive five innings. Despite walking four Clippers, Meyer did not allow a hit, while striking out seven. With his seven strikeouts, Meyer was able to pull into a tie for the most strikeouts in the International League with 49. Meyer threw 79 pitches, 47 for strikes.
Deolis Guerra came on in relief for Meyer (2-1) in the sixth, continuing the no-hitter with a one-two-three inning. Carlos Moncrief was finally able to break through in the seventh inning with an infield single off Guerra. After a walk to Justin Sellers, the Clippers had their first runner in scoring position since the top of the first inning. However, Guerra was able to work out of the jam and keep the shutout intact.
Following a lead-off single by Tim Fedroff, the Clippers finally got on the board in the eighth when former Red Wing Matt Carson hit a towering shot over the left field fence. Carson continued his dominance against his former team, as his home run today was his third in six games against the Wings this season. The Clippers pulled to within a run against Ryan Pressly, taking advantage of a throwing error by Romero, and then a fielding error by Pedro Florimon that allowed two runs to score.
After a Justin Sellers single that put the tying run on third base, Pressly's day was done. Aaron Thompson was called on in relief to face Audy Ciriaco with two outs. Thompson recorded the final out of the inning, getting Ciriaco to swing at the first three pitches he threw.
Columbus relievers struck out eight out of nine Red Wings batters at one point, until Dan Rohlfing laced a two-out single in the eighth inning.
In the ninth, Rohlfing made a diving stop at first base to take away an extra base hit from Tim Fedroff for the first out of the inning. Thompson walked Carson, then got a checked swing strike three call on David Cooper. The call prompted an argument that resulted in Charlotte manager Chris Tremie's ejection from the game. Thompson struck out clean-up hitter Giovanny Urshela for the final out of the game, and Thompson's first save of the season.
Herrmann had three hits, and Arcia had a pair of hits for the Wings. Rochester out-hit Columbus 11-6.
