Reynaldo Rodriguez hit a three-run homer, the key hit in a five-run fifth inning as the Red Wings defeated the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 6-1 Tuesday night at Frontier Field. The series and homestand concludes with an 11:05 a.m. game Wednesday morning; plenty of parking will be available in the Plymouth Ave. Kodak lot.
Wings starter Alex Meyer opposed a Lehigh Valley club that came into the game with a nine-game losing streak. Meyer had a loss and an no decision in his two previous starts against the IronPigs, but brought five straight quality starts into Tuesday's contest. Meyer struck out one and walked one in a scoreless first inning.
Lehigh Valley starter Brad Lincoln had won two of his three starts against the Wings this season. After going down in order against Lincoln in the first inning, the Wings took an early lead in the second.Deibinson Romero drew a one-out walk, moved to third base on a single by Daniel Ortiz, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Pedro Florimon.
The IronPigs tied the game in the fourth, using a walk, a stolen base, and a single to make the score 1-1. Meyer through four innings notched four strikeouts, while walking five batters and throwing 75 pitches.
After picking up just one hit in the first four innings, the Red Wings batted around in the fifth, scored five runs, and knocked Lincoln out of the game. Florimon walked, and Nate Hanson was hit by a pitch. Rodriguez followed by drilling a 2-2 pitch for a line drive home run just over the left field wall, putting the Wings ahead 4-1. A ground rule double by James Beresford, and a run-scoring fielder's choice by Ortiz added two more runs and the Wings led 6-1.
Meyer threw 96 pitches - 53 for strikes - in his five innings, walking five and striking out five. Lester Oliveros replaced Meyer on the mound to open the sixth inning. Oliveros was sharp in his two innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three batters.
Stephen Pryor worked the eighth and ninth for the Wings, allowing just a walk while striking out four.
Right fielder Rodriguez made a fine running catch in the ninth with a runner at first, taking an extra base hit away from Koyie Hill.
