Tyus Battle scores 28 points, helps lead SU to 71-62 win over Iona

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Four nights after experiencing their first career regular season game at Syracuse, the Orange newcomers had to deal with another "first" -- their first close game.

With 5:37 to play in the second half, Iona was trailing by only a bucket at 56-54.

From there, SU responded by outscoring the Gaels 15-8 the rest of the way.

Tyus Battle had more than half of those points down the stretch as he finished with a career-high 28 points, 23 of which came after intermission.

Frank Howard and Oshae Brissett also set new personal bests in terms of scoring.

Howard finished with 15 points while Brissett chipped in with 12.

Another freshman forward, Marek Dolezaj came off the bench to play 22 quality minutes.

Dolezaj contributed seven points and six rebounds, including a couple of important hustle plays in the final minutes of the game.

Rickey McGill led four Iona players in double figures with 21.

Syracuse shot 48 percent from the field while Iona hit 37 percent of its shots.  The Orange also won the battle on the backboards 42-29.

Next up for SU is a visit from Texas Southern on Saturday.
