Wednesday's Section V semifinal recap

4th times a charm for BK/Mercy, chalk in Boys A1, top-seed falls in A2

BOYS - Class A1

(1)Athena 70, (4)Mendon 61

In a game of back-and-forth runs, it was Athena snagging crucial buckets in the fourth quarter that were enough for a deserved win in the Class A1 semifinals.

The Trojans led by two at halftime and built a stronger lead after the interval. Mendon rallied back in the fourth quarter, getting the deficit back to two points, before Athena put the game away in the fourth quarter.

Nigel Scantlebury led the Trojans with 19 points. Christian Jones wasn't far behind with 16. Johnny Salone added 14.

Only four players got on the scoresheet for the Vikings. Daniel Cook finished with a game-high 20 points, while Matt Powers chipped in 19. Conner Knaph and Jacob Shadders each scored 11 points.

Athena will take on (2)Irondequoit in the Class A1 Final on Saturday, March 3rd at 9PM from Blue Cross Arena.

(2)Irondequoit 56, (3)Sutherland 48

After a slow start to the game, Irondequoit found its rhythm again and stormed back to top Sutherland in the Class A1 semifinals at Webster Schroeder.

Sutherland led by as many as 9 points in the first half. The Eagles slowly chipped away with a Robert Diaz-Judson bucket before halftime cutting the Knights' lead to 5 points.

Irondequoit battled back to take the lead on a Patrick Thomas runner in the lane. Thomas scored all 9 of his points for the game in the third quarter. The Eagles then pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Diaz-Judson finished the night as Irondequoit's leading scorer with 14 points. Kevin Ryan led Sutherland with 15 points.

Irondequoit will take on (1)Greece Athena in the Class A1 Final on Saturday, March 3rd at Blue Cross Arena.

Class A2

(4)NE Douglass 64, (1)Leadership 59

There will be an RCAC school in the sectional final, just not the one many expected as the Panthers pull off an upset Wednesday at Victor HS.

NE Douglass led at halftime by a point, and by the same margin after the third quarter. The Panthers then took off on a 13-3 run to open the 4th quarter.

With a minute remaining in regulation, Adonis Flagler buried a huge three pointer for the Panthers to seal the win.

NE Douglass will take on (2)Wayne in the Class A2 Final at 12pm on Saturday, March 3rd at Blue Cross Arena.

(2)Wayne 36, (6)HF-L 25

Offense may have been limited, but that doesn't matter to the Eagles after their stout defensive performance.

Wayne will take on (4)NE Douglass in the A2 Final at 12pm on Saturday, March 3rd at Blue Cross Arena.

GIRLS - Class AA

(3)Bishop Kearney 76, (2)Thomas 39

Saniaa Wilson led (3)Kearney to a 76-39 romp over (2)Webster Thomas in the first Class AA semifinal at Sutherland.

Wilson finished with 23 points and 17 boards. Allure Simmons added 20 for the Kings.

Thomas trailed 29-17 at the half, but Kearney outscored the Titans 30-10 in the third quarter to bury the game.

Bishop Kearney and (5)Mercy will meet in a sectional final for the fourth season in a row. The Class AA final is scheduled for 7pm Saturday at Rush-Henrietta.

(5)Mercy 73, (1)Penfield 66

Traiva Breedlove scored 29 points as (5)Mercy rallied from a five point fourth quarter deficit to knock off (1)Penfield 73-66 in the Class AA semifinal nightcap at Pittsford Sutherland.

In the fourth quarter, the Monarchs shut Penfield out for the first six minutes and held the Patriots to five points. The final three came at the buzzer.

Emily McDonagh nailed a three to tie the game less than two minutes into the fourth and Leah Koonmen scored a layup on the next possession to give Mercy the lead for good.

Penfield simply could not buy a bucket in the final eight minutes. The Patriots took the same types of shots they've made all season long. They just didn't go in.

Makaila Wilson scored 31 points, all in the first three quarters.

Koonmen added 20 points for Mercy, who improved to 18-5.

Penfield finishes the season at 19-3.
