Record crowds possible for NASCAR at Watkins Glen

The president says things are looking good so far

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - What is Watkins Glen doing right?

While NASCAR is struggling nationwide to draw fans and eyeballs nationwide, numbers at the Glen are still trending up.

Racing returns to the Glen this weekend, and they're talking about setting records.

"We hope to break our record attendance this weekend," said Watkins Glen International president Michael Printup. "It's looking good so far, but knock on wood, you never know how ticket buyers are going to react over the next five days."

At most tracks, NASCAR has been a disappointment.

TV ratings are declining and NASCAR hasn't provided attendance estimates since 2012 because the numbers are discouraging.

But not at Watkins Glen.

"You've seen some decline in attendance at other race tracks. Indianapolis is down. Michigan was down in June,” Printup said. “We haven't seen that.  We hope that we can uphold that and we'll see another huge crowd at Watkins Glen this weekend."
