Cardinals blank Red Dragons to open Super Regionals

Thayer strikes out 14

Rochester -

One run was all that was needed as the St. John Fisher College softball team downed SUNY Cortland, 1-0, Friday afternoon in game one of the NCAA Division III Super Regional played at the Fisher Softball Complex. With the victory, Fisher improves to 40-6, reaching the 40-win mark for second time in as many years.

It was a defensive battle, with the contest's only run coming in the bottom of the sixth frame. With one out, Katie Mazierski earned a base on balls. She was then advanced to second as Ashley Prince singled up the middle. That brought up Sarah Kubik, who currently ranks second on the squad in RBI this season. The sophomore made no mistake, sending a burner through the left side into the outfield. The hit allowed Mazierski to make it to the dish with ease, thus giving Fisher the only lead it would need.

Defensively, the Cardinals did well to keep Cortland from rounding the bases, stranding seven Red Dragons on the day. A large part of that came from pitcher Lindsey Thayer, who struck out 14 batters and only allowed three hits. The junior pitched all seven innings, improving her record to 27-5 on the season.
