Brian Gionta scores in his hometown debut

Amerks still come up short against Marlies

ROCHESTER - Before he wears the red, white, and blue for Team USA in the Olympics, Brian Gionta wore it Friday night for the Rochester Americans.

Gionta grew up playing travel hockey in the Amerks program, but the hometown kid never played professionally for the hometown team until this weekend.

With nearly 10,000 people on hand at Blue Cross Arena, Gionta scored perhaps his one and only goal for the Amerks in the second period on a breakaway.

Gionta will leave for South Korea next Wednesday where he will captain the US hockey team in the Olympics. He's keeping the door open for a possible return, but Gionta is opting to get through the Olympics first before making any decision.

The game was tied 2-2 after two periods, but the Toronto Marlies were determined to spoil the show, scoring two third period goals for a 4-2 win.
