It was freshman Hunter Merril who had to make the play.

Runners were on 2nd and 3rd with two outs in the bottom of the 7th and Sutherland was clinging to a 6-5 lead. Allowing a grounder through the legs would send the Knights home a state runner up.

However, Merril made the routine play look routine and Sutherland celebrated the first baseball state title for either Pittsford school with a 6-5 win over Wantagh at Union-Endicott High School in Binghamton Saturday night.

Grant Heyman gave Sutherland a 5-0 lead on a two-run home run, but Wantagh rallied for four runs in the 6th to get within 5-4. The Knights added what proved to be a vital insurance run in the top of the 7th. Wantagh scored again in the bottom half of the inning, but could not push across the tying run.

Sutherland defeated Whitesboro 5-1 in the semifinal game. That contest was twice delayed by thunder and lightning and did not end until nearly 5:30, almost 90 minutes after the state final was scheduled to start.
