Sutherland Pulls Away To Beat Wayne

- Liz Greendyke scored 19 points to help Sutherland finally fight off a strong challenge by Wayne and win the Class A state qualifier 55-46 at Canandaigua High School Tuesday night.

Sutherland led by three at the half, but Wayne quickly tied the score at 28 early in the third quarter. The game remained close until the final moments of the period. Grace DiGiovanni hit a layup and Bayley Axelrod made a three pointer in the final minute to give the Knights some breathing room at 35-29 with eight minutes to play.

Another Axelrod three and a Santita Ebangwese layup opened the fourth quarter and Sutherland seemed to be in command at 40-29. However, Wayne was not fazed and scored the next seven points. Shyana McLeod's baseline jumper cut the deficit to 40-36.

That was the last relevant point the Eagles got.

Axelrod stopped the run with a fast break layup and Greendyke followed with a three point play to spark a 10-0 run and that was the ballgame.

Ebangwese was the only other Pittsford player in double figures with 13 points.

McLeod led all scorers with 21 points for Wayne. Taylor Corts chipped in with 13.

Sutherland moves on to Saturday's state quarterfinals. The Class A game will tip at 1pm and the Knights will play the Class A champion from Buffalo's Section VI.
