Powers went the distance allowing only one run--and even that one should never have scored--as Williamsville South beat Sutherland 6-1 in the Class AA state quarterfinals Tuesday night at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia.
Sutherland loaded the bases with no outs in the 5th while trailing 2-0. Forrest Hurlbut was grazed by a pitch to score Michael Pringle from third, but the Knights would get no more. Powers induced a 1-2-3 double play and a strikeout to escape the jam.
In the 6th, the Knights drew a lead-off walk and attempted a sacrifice to move the tying run to 2nd. It worked... until Sutherland got greedy, trying to advance from first to third. The play turned into a 1-4-5 double play when Williamsville threw back across the diamond for a second out at third base.
The Billies opened the game up with four runs in the top of the 7th. Sutherland only sent three hitters to the plate in their other five at-bats.
