Quinton Rose found Brandon Kellam with a brilliant pass under the basket for an easy layup to break a 48-all tie with just over a minute to go. Fairport could not get a shot off on their ensuing possession, but the Kings could only make one free throw and left the door open for the Raiders' final chance.
Rose and Kellam each led the Kings with 12 points apiece. Rian Carter added 10.
Jamie Wolmering topped all scorers with 15 points for the Red Raiders, including three 3-pointers which all came in the second half.
A Rose breakaway dunk gave Kearney a seven point lead in the third quarter. Fairport then rattled off eight points in a row, capped by an Adam Pelusio three-pointer, to go on top 34-33. Rose hit a jumper to stop the run and the Kings led 37-36 with one period to play.
Stanley Foster made a three early in the fourth quarter to set the Kings ahead 40-37. However, Fairport found the stroke from long range again as Wolmering sandwiched a pair of three's around a triple by Matt Keenan on three consecutive possessions. Kearney could only muster two points at the other end and the result was a 46-42 Fairport lead.
Kearney came back, but as slow as possible. The Kings missed seven of 12 free throws during a five minute stretch midway through the fourth quarter. The Kings made three free throws in seven attempts, but Fairport went cold and Kearney closed to within 46-45.
With three minutes to play, Rose forced a steal and broke away for a go-ahead layup and foul. An exchange of free throws tied the game at 48 and set up the dramatic finish.
Kearney improved to 9-5 while Fairport fell to 11-4.
