HF-L pitched a shutout in overtime while Jake Apthorpe and Tyler Peterson each hit big shots as the Cougars upset (3)Sutherland 46-39 in a Class A Quarterfinal Saturda night in Pittsford.
Sutherland led by five midway through the 4th quarter, but (11)HF-L went on a 7-2 run to tie the game. Dylan Swetman scored four points in the run including the game tying bucket.
The Knights retook the lead with free throws, but Peterson answered with a short jumper to tie again at 39. Both teams had chances at the lead in the final minute, but could not convert.
Overtime remained scoreless for the first two minutes before Swetman found Apthorpe under the basket for an easy layup and a 41-39 lead. Peterson then drained a three pointer with the shot clock running down and just under a minute left in the extra session to seal the win.
Apthorpe led the Cougars with 14 points while Peterson finshed with 10 points and eight boards.
Grant Heyman topped all scorers with 17 points for Sutherland.
HF-L will face another upset winner in Wednesday's semifinal, getting 7-seed Pittsford Mendon. The Vikings beat (2)Arcadia on Saturday.
