Caileen Sennett scored seven points in the final 70 seconds of regulation and Nicole Bini had all five of (6)Aquinas overtime points in a 64-60 Class A semifinal win over (2)Newark at Gates-Chili High School Monday night.
Newark got a three pointer from Sarah Tanea and two free throws to take a five point lead with just over a minute to go.
The Irish answered when a scramble underneath left Sennett open at the top of the key for a three pointer, cutting the lead to two. After a timeout, Teja Reaves stole Newarks inbounds pass and fed Sennett for the tying bucket.
Two more free throws put Newark back on top by two, but Aquinas broke a soft press and Sennett drove baseline for a short jumper that tied the game at 59. Both teams then missed chances to win in regulation.
Bini nailed a three early in overtime that proved to be all the points AQ needed. Newark mustered one free throw in the extra session, one less than Bini by herself and the Irish were onto the sectional finals.
Bini led Aquinas with 22 points. Maggie VanKouwenberg had 23 for the defending state champs.
Aquinas will now face (1)Arcadia in Thursdays Class A title game at Gates-Chili.
