Way-Co Nips LeRoy In OT In Championship

- Reece Chapman scored (3)Wayland-Cohocton's first TD on 4th down in the 4th quarter and then scored the game winner in overtime as the Eagles won a 14-8 slugfest with (4)LeRoy in the Class C Sectional Championship at Sahlen's Stadium Friday night.

The first half was a defensive coordinator's dream. The two teams combined for 50 total yards of offense and exactly one first down.

There were no points and hardly the threat of points until late in the third quarter. Way-Co's C.J. Ellis found Darren Becker for 46 yards down to the LeRoy 11 yard line.

The Eagles quickly set up first and goal at the 1, but the Knights stiffened with two consecutive stops. Wayland-Cohocton then took a procedure penalty and a sack, which landed them in 4th and goal from the 12. However, Ellis found Chapman on an out at the the three yard line and he tumbled into the end zone for a touchdown. The two point run by Devon Harris made it 8-0.

The lead lasted all of two snaps.

After a Way-Co sack, Mike McMullen swung a pass right to Ryan McQuillen who was sprung nicely for a 70-yard touchdown reception. McMullen found Nick Egeling for two and the game was even at eight with nine minutes to play.

Both teams were able to cross midfield again, but neither got close to scoring before heading to overtime.

The Eagles took the ball first and quickly punched it in. Ellis went back to Chapman from nine yards on a play that looked very similar to the first touchdown. The two-point try was no good.

On LeRoy's turn, the Knights moved the ball eight yards in three plays. On 4th and two, they tried running off left tackle, but Way-Co was there to smother the play and LeRoy's comeback chances.

Harris led all ballcarriers with 94 yards on the ground. Chapman's two TDs were the only plays where he touched the ball.

For LeRoy, McMullen finished with 165 yards passing. McQuillen had 108 of that on five catches. The Eagles held LeRoy's powerful run game to just 59 yards.

The Eagles will next play in the state quarterfinals next Saturday against the Class C winner from Buffalo's Section Six. The game will be played at Sahlen's Stadium.
