After struggling with his throws most of the game, Majewski hit Zach Kelly for an 18-yard TD with 49 seconds to play as Williamsville North came from behind to beat Eastridge 23-20 in the Class A state quarterfinal Friday night at Sahlen's Stadium.
Majewski finished with 12 completions for 142 yards but more than half came on the final drive.
With 3:02 left, Majewski drove the Spartans 81 yards on 11 plays in just two minutes and 19 seconds. Kelly converted a 3rd and 8 with a nine yard catch to the 50. Casey Davis made a nice catch in traffic to get the ball inside the 30. Then, the Spartans turned 2nd and 16 into a first down on throws to Kolby Hughes and Dean Thompson. The next throw was the game winner.
Eastridge had take the lead with a drive that was equally dramatic. Jametrius Lewis found Kevin Sprague for 43 yards down the right sideline on 3rd and 10. The Lancers then faced 4th and 2 at the Williamsville North 19 yard line, when head coach Chad Green did what he does best--make the unexpected, gutsy call.
From the double wing formation, Green called a play-action pass. Jametrius threw while running to his left and still nailed a perfect pass to Ricky Hagins at the Williamsville North two. Hagins fell in for the go-ahead score.
Lewis was, by far, the best weapon on the field. He passed for 104 yards and rushed for 159, including a 73 yard touchdown and another 50 yarder. The latter set up Jay'Von Hampton for a short TD run that cut the Spartans' lead to 16-13.
Derick Isler led all ballcarriers with 231 yards rushing on 27 carries and he scored the game's first touchdown. Chad Steinwachs added a 27-yard field goal and Will North had an early 10-0 lead.
Lewis uncorked the 73-yard scamper on the very next play to get Eastridge within 10-7. However, the Spartans got a pass from Majewski to Hughes that put the ball at the two. Majewski then snuck it twice to get in the end zone for a 16-7 Williamsville North halftime lead.
Williamsville North moves on to the state semifinals next week at Sahlen's Stadium. Eastridge finishes their season at 9-2.
